This is a much bigger piece than I am used to doing. It was also somewhat of a struggle to complete but my abstracts usually are. When I look back on the finished "product" I can always see the journey of ideas and the pattern of time in my work. For me, there is such a clear beginning and end. Imagery wise, this piece tells the story of the journey that sperm make within their short lives.

The attitude that nature is chaotic and that the artist puts order into it is a very absurd point of view, I think. All that we can hope for is to put some order into ourselves. WILLEM DE KOONING

For me the Bound Series does not represent a literal representation of the bound figure. It is more symbolic. The figures , even though they appear bound, also appear strong and sure. Is it just the rope that binds? Or is it binding of what we put upon ourselves both mentally and socially?

Drawing is the art of being able to leave an accurate record of the experience of what one isn't, of what one doesn't know. A great drawer is either confirming beautifully what is commonplace or probing authoritatively the unknown. BRETT WHITELEY

This is the second piece in my new series titled "BOUND". The eye is directed through the piece by the arms. They dissect the image into two halves while the rope creates a horizontal dissection. Even though the figure would appear vunerable due to the rope, the woman seems strong and sure of herself. What binds her besides the physical?

What I'm attempting in each picture is nothing other than this.. to bring together in a living and viable way, the most different and the most contradictory elements in the greatest possible freedom. GERHARD RICHTER
