Graphite drawing on stonehenge paper
8 x 10
I just loved the composition of this picture. The way the hands and the toy come out of the picture and the expression on my sons face was priceless. There is something about him that makes me want to draw and draw him.

As for the technical side of the piece I used graphite pencil on stonehenge paper. One of my drawing secrets is that I use Q-tips to blend the graphite.

Another painting of my little angel. This certainly shows his silly side. He is a very lively character. He loves to put on costumes and go crazy around the house. I am not so sure if I captured his exact likeness but that is not what I was going for. I more so wanted to catch his spirit and his funny nature. Hope you all enjoy!!!!

As for the actual painting side of the piece, I used a Windsor and Newton gallery stretched canvas, acrylic paint, brushes and a palette knife to lay down the background color. I mixed a little gloss medium in the background color in order to give it a little shine and to give it a different quality from the figure.

Acrylic Painting on Oval stretched canvas
11 x 14
At first, I was unsure of what to do with this canvas. Due to the unusual shape it dictates what kinds of images can be painted on it. For this reason, I felt an abstract piece may be the best choice for this shape. My sperm image is very fluid so it sits well with the oval space. I used metallic paint in many areas to give it that luminescent quality.

This is a realistic drawing of my husband. This is a match to the one I did of our son and I plan to display them together as a set. I love the over layering of color when you use color pencils. It is a building process and each color affects the other. Stonehenge paper is very sturdy and great for this process. You need this kind of paper in order to build up the color. a slighter paper would not hold up to this process.

Colored Pencil On Stonehenge Paper

Yet another picture of my son BJ. I used colored pencil on Stonehenge paper to create his portrait. I love doing his picture in high realism but when it comes to his hair I always go a little funky. His hair is such an unusual color and the curls are great that i always try a different technique.

"Afternoon Green Tea" Acrylic Painting

Acrylic paint on gallery stretched canvas

This is an acrylic painting of one of my Korean teacups in the late afternoon sun. The sun cast long black shadows and brilliant light across my dining room table. The cup is a very nice earth green tone which sits well on the floral tablecloth.

This is also the third painting done in this acrylic painting technique in which I primed the canvas in black before starting the painting. This allowed any color laid on top to pop off the canvas. It is also 6" x 6" so it is fairly small but the image is very striking. On the edge of this painting, I painted a more whimsical design. I felt that this painting was more playful so needed something more casual on the edges. The blue flower is taken from the pattern in the tablecloth.

Graphite Drawing On Stonehenge Paper
8 x 10
Another drawing of my little angel...:) This is a graphite drawing done on Stonehenge paper. When you use a higher quality paper it certainly makes a difference to the piece. The graphite flows better onto the paper. As for the composition, the drawing was done from a photo taken of my son on a visit to a local farm last summer. The ponies are Newfoundland ponies so they are a much smaller horse. My son would have loved to been able to ride one.

This is an acrylic painting of the tomatoes I grew last year in my kitchen garden. I never had much success with the tomatoes but they did look nice on the plate waiting to ripen. This piece takes in the late afternoon light which cast long shadows and created brillant colors.

Acrylic painting on canvas
6 x 6
I just love the afternoon sun as it shines in through my living room window. The brilliance of the sun casts long dark shadows along the walls and floors. In this piece, the sun plays across a mask and a set of prints I had brought back from a trip to Thailand. I started this piece by priming the canvas in black acrylic paint. This allows the colors to pop off the canvas and create that bright mid afternoon sun. Due to the thickness of the canvas frame I was able to paint a design around the edging of the canvas. I used a gold paint because in the pictures hung around the mask there are gold paint pictures on black fabric.

I have been a follower of the Daily Painters Art Gallery for a long time now. One painter on there inspired me to paint this way today. His name is Edward B. Gordon. He too captures stark lighting on figures and various subject matters. He also paints in small format but uses bold colors and brush strokes. If you get the chance check him out. You won't be disappointed.

I have a very wide collection of objects from various countries that I have collected over the years on my travels around the world. I just fell in love with this mask when I was in Phuket Thailand. The craftsmanship is top notch. The elongated face is not something you see in a lot of masks from that region. The beautiful color of the wood and the decorative painting on the face makes it a magnificent piece. Hung in frames around the mask are hand painted gold pictures done on fabric also from Thailand.
